Are you due for an oil change? This service is a routine part of caring for your vehicle. But how much do you know about it, such as what it involves and why it's important?

At Glockner Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Portsmouth, we offer oil changes as part of our services. To help you understand this service better, let's explore the following frequently asked questions!

Oil Change FAQs

It’s a service that helps keep your engine running smoothly. Oil changes involve draining or siphoning the oil from your vehicle and filling it with new oil.

This depends on a couple of factors, such as:

  • Type of oil
  • Engine type
  • Manufacturer specifications for your engine

For many vehicles, oil changes are recommended every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Those that use fully synthetic oil might be able to have this done every 10,000 to 15,000 miles. This might vary depending on your engine, though.

A good rule of thumb is to have this service done twice a year or every six months. We can let you know how often to have your oil changed to keep your engine in good shape!

That depends on the kind of oil your vehicle uses. With some types of oil, like synthetic oil, you may be able to go over a few hundred miles or more before having the oil changed.

But we recommend having oil changes done on a routine basis. Otherwise, you’re taking the risk of ending up with engine problems — including a shorter engine lifespan!

Your vehicle needs this service for a few reasons, such as:

  • Good lubrication for your engine’s components to keep them functioning
  • Helps keep the engine up and running smoothly
  • Helps prevent your vehicle from overheating

Without oil changes, the oil in the engine can get sludgy, affecting its performance. Or your engine ends up with a low oil level, putting it at risk of developing problems.

The old oil in your engine comes out via draining or siphoning. Then, we fill your engine with brand-new oil. We’ll make sure the engine has the right oil level for optimal performance.

Not sure if it’s time to have this service done? You can check this on your own if you’re comfortable doing so. Your owner’s manual should give you specific steps on how to check if you need an oil change.

These steps might generally include:

  • Removing the oil dipstick
  • Wiping off the oil dipstick and putting it back in place
  • Taking the oil dipstick out again and checking the oil level based on markings, such as “low” or “full”
  • Checking the oil color to see if it’s a normal black/brown or an abnormally lighter color

When it comes to oil change vs. adding oil, what’s the difference? Topping off or adding oil to the current oil isn’t recommended. Having dirty oil mixed with new oil can affect the overall performance. Only add oil if you absolutely need to, such as in an emergency.

No, you should plan to have your routine oil changes done as often as recommended. It doesn’t depend on whether it’s hot or cold outside.

Not quite! Different kinds of oil changes may be needed for different kinds of engines. Does your vehicle run on diesel? A diesel engine usually needs to have the oil changed more often, along with more frequent filter changes, as these engines are typically dirtier overall.

Not necessarily. You can use any oil that meets the specifications in your vehicle owner’s manual, such as the viscosity grade. Different types of oils that are available include:

  • Conventional
  • Full Synthetic
  • Synthetic blend
  • High-performance

It’s possible to do so — but we highly recommend having it done professionally! DIY oil changes are a messy task that takes up your time. Our experts can handle it instead for your convenience.
